Dear Lisa, thanks for being with us today to talk about your “Fairy Godmother’s Guide to Finance for Couples”. Can you please tell us more about you?
I’m a writer/wife/mother/dog doorman living in Anchorage Alaska. Our children are both in college now, which give me a little more time for writing, both fiction and nonfiction. I’ve been an avid reader all my life, and I decided I’d like to try to give to others some of the joy and wisdom that books have given to me over the years.

What motivated you to write this book?
I’ve read so many financial books that seem to try to frighten people into learning about money, especially the ones aimed at women. Their attitude is “What if he dies or you get divorced and you’re left all alone to cope with money?” I want people to know that planning and learning about money together can be fun as well as profitable.

What are your top tips about finance for couples?
The most important is to share your dreams. When you are focused on the future and what can be accomplished, you are a team working toward the same objectives. The book shows you exactly how to get from dreams to goals to plans. But it starts with your dreams for your life together.

Another important tip is to be kind. Remember, this is the person you value more than anyone else in the world. His or her opinions are important. One person may want to retire to a mountain cabin while the other dreams of a downtown loft. You’ll need to talk about it, figure out what drives the dreams, and work out a compromise. Also occasionally someone is bound to slip up on the plan, and the other partner needs to be flexible and forgiving.

The book covers all the details about everything from making a budget to IRAs to investing for college, but sharing and kindness are the basics. After all money is just a tool, a means to an end. A caring attitude is the way to live your lives.

What makes your book different from the others?
This book covers the basics in an easy-to-understand way. It gives you the information you’ll need to save and invest, but first it helps you focus on exactly why you want to save and invest. The plan is just a way of making sure that your money is focused on the areas that are most important to you as a couple.

What do you think about Kindle publishing, and how do you get to spread the voice about your work there?
Kindle is a wonderful opportunity for writers like me. Those of us who have experience or just a story to share can get it directly to the readers without going through months and years of mailing out manuscripts and waiting for publishers. Kindle has been fabulous for me as a reader too, with a wealth of books available for very reasonable prices – another great financial tip.
