B.C. residents grabbing iodine to guard against Japanese radiation: published on March 15 http://www.vancouversun.com/story_print.html?id=4444434&sponsor=

British Columbia residents are ignoring the advice of the province’s health authorities and buying up medicinal iodine in hopes it will protect them against radiation from a potential nuclear crisis in Japan.

“Normally, we only sell potassium iodide solution to people who’ve been recommended iodine for their thyroid gland by their naturopaths or other doctors,” she said. “But now they’re coming in because they’re concerned about radiation coming in across the ocean from Japan.”

The substance, which can prevent thyroid glands from absorbing radiation, also comes in powder form and tablets.

Dr. Perry Kendall, B.C.’s provincial health officer, has said there is no need for consumption of potassium iodide because there is no health risk of radiation.

Worries intensified Tuesday over the nuclear facility in Fukushima, Japan, damaged from Friday’s earthquake after multiple explosions and a fire to reactors.

Alarcon said the provincial government had told pharmacists across B.C. not to recommend potassium iodide. She said if used incorrectly, the substance — available without a prescription — can cause health problems, such as heart palpitations, gastrointestinal aggravations and rashes.

Our comment: if, after speaking with your doctor, you decide to take any of these supplements, make sure to get them from a licensed source. If your local pharmacy is temporarily out of them, in my opinion you take more risks by buying it from anonymous Craigslist or eBay sellers, than by not using it. Craigslist, eBay, etc. are wondeful sites to by other goods, but when you buy something for your health, make sure to relay on accountable sellers.
