In this talk (Thursday, March 3, 2011 – 19:00 – 21:00), Jack Miller will discuss how the development of wisdom and compassion can become a central aim in education through a holistic curriculum. The presentation will begin with a discussion of what is wisdom and how it can be manifested in our lives. The talk will then focus on how a holistic curriculum, which focuses on personal, social and environmental connections, can nurture wisdom in students. Finally, the role of teacher will be examined in facilitating a wisdom-based approach to education.

John (Jack) Miller has been working in the field of holistic education for over 30 years. He is author/editor of more than a dozen books on holistic learning and contemplative practices in education, which include Education and the Soul, Educating for Wisdom and Compassion, The Holistic Curriculum, and most recently, Whole Child Education. His writing has been translated into eight languages. The Holistic Curriculum has provided the framework for the curriculum at the Whole Child School, now named Equinox school, in Toronto where Jack has served on the Advisory Board.

Coming Up in the Speaker Series
On April 12, join Jannet Ann Nordemann, Founder of Canadians for Compassion, and Rev. Ric Matthews, Executive Minister at First United Church Mission in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, for “Living Compassion in Community”. The event will be co-hosted by the Greater Vancouver Compassion Network.

Dr Stephen Post, Director/Founder of the Center for Medical Humanities, Compassionate Care, and Bioethics, will give a talk on April 29, entitled “The Power of Giving, Compassion and Hope”.

On May 10, Dr Daniel Siegel, of the Mindsight Institute, will be looking at the role of mindsight, the interweaving of insight, empathy and mindfulness.
