I grew up in Chilliwack, BC along with my two younger sisters. As long as I remember, I had killer-painful migraine headaches as a child; though I tried natural remedies and prescriptions, nothing worked until I changed my diet. Five and a half years ago I went vegan overnight thanks to a contest I won with Earthsave Canada. Both my sisters were vegan at the time (and still are) and I had been dabbling at the idea of eating less meat, so I signed up for their weekly newsletter, having no idea what it would lead to. The first newsletter I received I entered a contest to win a copy of The Vegetarian Manifesto; a book filled with vegan recipes and many convincing reasons why one should eat a plant based diet. I won it and was hooked!

A few years later I moved from Chilliwack to Vancouver. When I first moved to the city, I was just starting to adjust to various food allergies I had discovered by taking an allergy elimination diet that a naturopathic doctor helped me with. As much as I hate having allergies they made me realize how unhealthy my diet was before. My gluten and sulfates/sulfites allergies showed me how much food could affect me; because of that, I began eating a lot healthier, dabbling in whole foods vegan and raw vegan food for the past three years.

It was during this time that a few friends of mine (Patricia and also Kip) introduced me to kombucha. I became so in love with this fermented tea health food that I started reading all the books at the library on this topic. I wanted to share my knowledge, so I started teaching kombucha classes and ultimately started a foodie blog (http://blowingupmykitchen.blogspot.com) to share my knowledge. My love for knowledge led me to the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition in Kits two years ago. I am just about to finish my schooling and will shortly be a Registered Holistic Nutritionist. After graduation I plan to write a book on kombucha, teach more kombucha classes, start teaching some foodie classes and get into freelance writing for various health food publications.

I’ve gone from the Standard American Diet (SAD), killer migraines every four weeks like clockwork and not ever knowing if there was away to escape the pain. Becoming vegan was a good step in the right direction, but even more so since I became a whole foods vegan. I’ve only had about 2 migraines in the past three years since eating mostly whole foods.

I currently live in east Vancouver, along with my two lovely vegan roommates and my roommie’s kitty Douce. Being able to live in a city that supports my lifestyle really means a lot to me. Vancouver has so much to offer for vegans: vegan/raw vegan potlucks (http://blowingupmykitchen.blogspot.com/2010/03/raw-resources.html), attending veggie dine-outs (http://www.meetup.com/Vancouver-Meatless-Meetup/), foodie/animal rights movies, raw vegan classes (http://blowingupmykitchen.blogspot.com/2011/02/vancouver-raw-food-school.html) and the chance to meet so many like-minded individuals is what I enjoy most from the city.
